Filtering medium BIRM A8006 for iron and manganese reduction from water

Birm is a black granular filtering material used for removing iron and/or manganese from water in pressure or gravity systems. It is produced by Clack and has the code A8006. It contains an insoluble active catalyst for precipitating iron and/or manganese. Due to the predominant presence of iron, iron removal is the typical application for Birm. Under suitable conditions, iron and dissolved oxygen in water react upon contact with the Birm filter bed and, as a result, iron is precipitated as a hydroxide. This is a flocculent material that is filtered in the Birm bed. Periodic backwashing removes accumulated iron and Birm is again ready to perform its function. Birm is not consumed in the iron removal operation.

Conditions for iron removal:

• No hydrogen sulfide present.
• Organic matter must not exceed 4-5 ppm, as indicated by the consumed oxygen value.
• Oil must not be present.
• Dissolved oxygen content of at least 15% of the iron content. (Example: Iron = 10 ppm. Dissolved oxygen = 1.5 ppm or higher).
• A pH of 6.5 or higher.

Note: Correction of waters with a pH lower than 6.5 can be achieved through several methods. Aeration, using Corosex "F" (CLACK neutralization method) or adding chemicals such as soda are examples of common methods frequently used. A combination of the above methods is often used, depending on the amount of correction desired. The dissolved oxygen content of a water source is increased through proper aeration.

Conditions for manganese removal:

Removing manganese from water through the catalytic action of Birm usually requires a higher pH than that needed for iron removal. Water of this type should have a pH between 8.0 and 9.0. The dissolved oxygen content must be 15% or more of the total manganese and iron content expressed in ppm.

Industrial use instructions:

• Bed depth: 30-38 inch
• Support bed of calibrated sand with a depth of 14 inch or more.
• Operating flow rate: 6 liters per minute per m2
• Free space: 35 to 50% of the bed depth.
• Backwashing is performed whenever pressure drops
• Backwashing is usually performed in 20-30 minutes.

Residential use instructions:

• Bed depth: approximately 24 to 30 inches.
• Support bed of calibrated sand with a depth of 8 inches or more.
• Operating flow rate: 8 liters per minute per m2.
• Overpressure space: 35 to 50% of the bed depth.
• Backwashing is recommended every 10 days to 2 weeks.

When treating water with high iron content, more frequent backwashing is recommended. If 8 gallons per minute per square foot of fine Birm is not available for backwashing, air washing is recommended. This can be done by passing air through an injector into the backwash water.
