The Ecomix C resin is a filter media made up of a mix of 5 ion exchange resins and natural and synthetic absorbent materials, specially designed to remove hardness, iron, manganese, ammonium and organic matter from water. The Ecomix C filter media is designed to treat water with moderate concentrations of iron, manganese, ammonium and a high organic content. Ecomix C can soften water up to 40 German degrees.

The Ecomix C resin is used in cabinet-type or separate-tank softening units and is loaded directly into the fiberglass tank of the automatic filtration station. Initially, the resin is combined and the layers of the 5 resins cannot be distinguished. After the first regeneration of the automatic station, the resin mix settles into distinct layers due to the different densities of the 5 resin types. To regenerate the Ecomix C resin, softening salt tablets are used.

How does the Ecomix C resin work?

Raw water passes through all 5 layers of the Ecomix C resin and will absorb, in turn, calcium and magnesium ions, iron, manganese, ammonium and organic matter from the water. During the filtration of water through the cation exchange resin, the hardness ions Ca2+ and Mg2+ are replaced by Na+ ions, thus reducing water hardness to a minimum. Replacing calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions prevents the formation of limescale deposits on the heating surfaces of boilers, heat exchangers and central heating systems.

Each layer of filter media in this resin will absorb the respective elements. As water passes through the resin, the number of sodium ions available for exchange decreases, while the number of ions retained on the resin increases, until the cation exchange resin reaches saturation. This is why the resin must be regenerated by passing a sodium chloride solution (brine) through the cation exchange layer, which will restore the exchange capacity of the resin for another cycle of use. Resin regeneration is carried out automatically by the filtration station valve.

What are the regeneration steps?

• The first step is to backwash the filter media, thus removing iron, manganese and ammonium compounds from between the layers.
• Brine (salt water) is automatically introduced into the filter media, flushing out hard salts and organic matter.
• The filter media is backwashed again to remove excess brine.
• To re-settle the layers of the 5 resins, a strong jet of water enters the tank.
• Water is added to the salt reservoir for use in the next regeneration.
