What is the difference between water pH and total alkalinity?

Understand the essential difference between water pH (acidity/alkalinity) and total alkalinity (acid-neutralizing capacity). Learn how to correctly measure each parameter for optimal water quality.

Increasing pH and water alkalinity are concepts related to water chemistry, but they refer to different aspects of it. pH measures the acidity or alkalinity of water on a scale from 0 to 14, while total alkalinity indicates the water's ability to neutralize acids and stabilize pH, expressed in mg/L CaCO3.

    Water pH

    • Definition: pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of water, on a scale from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is considered neutral, values below 7 are acidic, and values above 7 are alkaline.
    • Measurement: pH measures the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in water. More precisely, pH is the negative logarithm of the concentration of hydronium ions (H3O+).
    • Importance: pH influences chemical and biological processes in water, affecting the solubility and toxicity of certain chemical compounds, as well as the health of aquatic organisms.

    Water Alkalinity

    • Definition: Alkalinity refers to the ability of water to neutralize acids, meaning its resistance to pH changes. It is a measure of the amount of bases in water, particularly bicarbonate (HCO3-), carbonate (CO3^2-), and hydroxide (OH-).
    • Measurement: Alkalinity is usually expressed in milligrams per liter (mg/L) of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) or equivalents.
    • Importance: Alkalinity helps stabilize the pH of water, preventing rapid fluctuations that could be harmful to aquatic life. It also helps maintain favorable chemical conditions for many biological and chemical processes.

How are water alkalinity and pH measured?

Water alkalinity is measured by titration with a standard acid. The process begins by preparing a water sample, for example, 100 ml in a titration beaker. A few drops of phenolphthalein indicator are added to the sample, then standard acid (e.g., H2SO4 or HCl) is slowly added from a burette, mixing continuously until the solution changes color from pink to colorless, indicating the phenolphthalein titration endpoint. The volume of acid used is recorded, and to measure total alkalinity, titration continues until the pH reaches 4.5, using another indicator if necessary. Alkalinity is calculated using the volume of acid consumed and a specific formula, with the result expressed in mg/L of CaCO3.

pH measurement is carried out using a pH meter calibrated with buffer solutions of known pH (usually pH 4, 7, and 10). Once calibrated, the pH meter probe is inserted into the water sample, and the reading is allowed to stabilize. The pH value is then read and recorded directly from the pH meter display. Thus, pH directly measures the concentration of hydrogen ions in the water, indicating whether it is acidic, neutral, or alkaline.

The Relationship Between pH and Alkalinity

Although pH and alkalinity are distinct concepts, they are interconnected. High alkalinity can prevent large pH variations, stabilizing the aquatic environment. Conversely, water with low alkalinity can exhibit rapid pH fluctuations, which can be stressful for aquatic organisms.

The difference between alkaline water and water alkalinity is that alkaline water has a pH greater than 7, indicating that it is basic, whereas water alkalinity refers to its ability to neutralize acids, reflecting the concentration of bicarbonate, carbonate, and hydroxide ions.

In conclusion, although pH and alkalinity are both essential for health and are interconnected, they measure different aspects and play distinct roles in water chemistry.
