    What does reverse osmosis filtration mean?

    Reverse osmosis is a water filtration technology that uses a semipermeable membrane to remove impurities from drinking water. This membrane has extremely small pores, of about 0.0001 microns, which allow water molecules to pass through but retain contaminants such as:

    • Sediments: sand, silt, rust
    • Microorganisms: bacteria, viruses
    • Chemical molecules: chlorine, pesticides, nitrates
    • Heavy metals: lead, mercury, arsenic

    The reverse osmosis process is based on the principle of osmosis, a natural phenomenon by which water moves from an area with a low solute concentration (pure water) to an area with a higher solute concentration (contaminated water) through a semipermeable membrane.

    To force the water to pass through the semipermeable membrane in the reverse direction, that is, from the contaminated area to the pure area, pressure is applied.

    A reverse osmosis system usually has the following components:

    • Pre-filters: cartridges that remove sediments, chlorine and other large impurities
    • Reverse osmosis membrane: the semipermeable membrane that removes contaminants
    • Post-filter: cartridge that improves the taste and smell of the water
    • Storage tank: stores the filtered water so it is available on demand

    The advantages of using a reverse osmosis system for household water filtration include:

    • Removes a wide range of contaminants: provides purer and safer drinking water
    • Reduces the unpleasant taste of water: can remove chlorine, metals and other substances that can affect the taste of water

    The disadvantages of using a reverse osmosis system include:

    • Water waste: part of the water entering the system is rejected as wastewater
    • Requires maintenance: periodic replacement of the pre-filters and the membrane is necessary
